Default TRD Supercharger Reference Guide - Celica

So I made this write-up about a year ago, and thought it would be good to post here! So, here it is...the fruits of my labour!

Tom's Disclaimer : As always, I am not responsible for your actions. If for any reason your vehicle fails to operate normally after the installation of the Supercharger Unit, I cannot be held responsible for any damages caused by the person who performed the installation. All instructions are written to the best of the author's knowledge. Remember, this is for informational purposes ONLY and not an install guide.
_____________________________________

I've created this thread based on my reasearch and install of the TRD Supercharger. There's a ton of information on different boards pertaining to the TRD Supercharger, so I figured I would create this and keep everything in one spot to make it easier for people in the future. I hope this information is as useful to you, as it was to me. Enjoy.

Here are some files which I have accumulated through the past little while.

TRD Supercharger Install Guide - Unit Install
TRD Supercharger Install Guide - ECU Install
TRD Supercharger Information Sheet

I have also created a wiring guide for the E-Mange Blue Piggy Back Unit.

Wiring Guide for E-Manage Blue

The TRD Supercharger

Toyota had created a supercharger kit for both the '03-'04 Matrix and Corolla. Nothing was available for the Celica from Toyota directly. Since the Celica 1ZZ-FE and the Corolla/Matrix 1ZZ-FE are initially the same engines, just slightly different fuel maps and valve sizes, the supercharger will work on the Celica with few modifications. GM also created a supercharger kit for the Pontiac Vibe, which again, is the exact same kit as Toyota's since the Pontiac Vibe 1ZZ-FE is the same as the Matrix/Corolla's.

Here are the PART NUMBERS for the Toyota TRD Supercharger Kits:

2003 Matrix Auto 00602-17620-105
2003 Matrix Manual 00602-17620-106
2003 Corolla Auto 00602-17620-107
2003 Corolla Manual 00602-17620-108
2004 Matrix Auto 00602-17620-109
2004 Matrix Manual 00602-17620-111
2004 Corolla Auto 00602-17620-114
2004 Corolla Manual 00602-17620-115

Intake/Supercharger Metal Gasket

PART NUMBER - 17171-0D010

Supercharger Fuel Line Banjo Bolt/Washers

Banjo Bolt PART NUMBER - 90401-12097
Washers PART NUMBER - 90430-12005

Supercharger Fuel Line

PART NUMBER - 00602-17620-150 (This number is on the actual tag of the fuel line)

Modifications Needed to Work on a Celica GT

Unfortunately, due to small differences in the engines between the Matrix/Corolla/Vibe and the Celica, the TRD Supercharger Kit isn't just a 'plug-and-play' kit. There are things you will need to replace and/or alter in order to run this system safely and correctly on your Celica GT.

Here is the Factory Toyota TRD Supercharger Parts List:

TRD Supercharger Unit
TRD ECU
TRD SC ECM Adapter
TRD Wire Harness (ECU)
TRD Wire Harness (Injector)
Diagnostic Sticker

Thermostat

TRD offers a 160F and a 170F thermostat. They can be purchased HERE - MONKEY WRENCH RACING .

TRD 160F Thermostat PART NUMBER - TRD-106160
TRD 170F Thermostat PART NUMBER - TRD-106170

Throttle Body

The throttle body from the Celica GT differs from that of a Corolla/Matrix/Vibe in the sense that the angle is slightly different. If you are mechanically inclined, there's no reason why you shouldn't be able to make the Celica GT throttle body work for you.
I have included pictures of my setup showing the alignment issues of the throttle cable bracket, coolant hoses and Air Intake Tubing.

In this first picture, you can see the difference in angle for the CAI piping. A simple solution for this is to purchase a longer silicon adapter with a slighty angle and attach it connecting the CAI to the throttle body. If you have trouble finding the right angle silicon adapter, a heat gun does wonders to mold it into the proper angle.

In this picture, you can see how much further to the driver's side the Celica throttle body is moved due to the length of the supercharger. The Corolla/Matrix/Vibe throttle bodies all have the throttle cable coming in from the driver's side, where the Celica's have theirs come in from the passenger's side. The mounting holes between all of the mentioned models are all located in the same spots.

In this picture, it shows how much you have to lengthen to coolant lines. This is a fairly easy procedure of just replacing the existing hoses with new, longer hoses. These new hoses can be purchased from any automotive parts store.

***NOTE: I did NOT use the supplied TRD hoses due to the lengths being too short because I used the Celica GT throttle body. If you used the throttle body from a Corolla/Matrix/Vibe, you can use the hoses supplied from TRD.

Hood

Since the 1ZZ-FE in the Corolla/Matrix/Vibe are angled more forward then the Celica GT, this causes the supercharger to stick up higher. Because of this, the stock hood is NOT USEABLE. You may be brave enough to create your own hood cowl to accomodate the supercharger, or purchase the B-Magic Celica Supercharger Hood made by AIT Racing. I've included picture of the hood clearance issues below.

These first pictures show exactly how much the supercharger sticks up out of the engine bay on a Celica GT.

These following pictures are of the B-Magic Celica Supercharger Hood on the Celica GT.

Gauges

The most important gauges to have while running the TRD Supercharger are:

- Air/Fuel
- Boost
- Oil Pressure
- EGT (optional)

With these gauges, you will have a full view on how the engine is doing while driving/tuning.

Wideband O2 Sensor

You will need to purchase a Wideband O2 Sensor for tuning capabilities and for monitoring the air/fuel ratio while driving/tuning.
A good system is the AEM UEGO system whihc includes the controller, gauge and sensor all in one package. Purchasing a wideband O2 sensor is a MUST!

AEM UEGO Gauge-Type Controller - Part # - 30-4100

Engine Control Unit (ECU)

The TRD ECU, which is supplied with every kit, is programmed for its specific vehicle. Numerous people have tried using it on the Celica GT, and have had problems with pinging and knocking at different RPM ranges. Other people on the other hand have tried it, and have no problems whatsoever.

***NOTE: I advise noone to use the supplied TRD ECU. Using it can cause damage to both the engine and the supercharger. Noone wants to see their hard work go to waste.

There are many different options available to Celica GT owners with the TRD Supercharger. Piggyback Units like the E-Manage Blue, E-Manage Ultimate, Unichip, PFC, etc. are all great units to use with the TRD Supercharger. You also have the option of going with a Standalone unit such as HydraEMS. This involves ALOT more tuning than the piggyback systems.

In order for these units, both Piggyback and Standalone, to work, you must create 'Maps'. Unless you have lots of experience with this, the car should be taken to a tuner to be tuned properly. Maps are often shared with other people, but you must be careful. Everyones car is different, and not everyone has the same modifications done to their car. The best thing to do is have it taken to a tuner for proper set-up.

The list above is what you will need to modify in order to run the TRD Supercharger properly in your system. I've accumulated this information myself from doing countless a amount of searches and tests. If I come across any new information that would be beneficial, I will add it to this post accordingly.

Thanks for looking, and happy boosting!

Tom

Yea, it's the only hood available for the Celica that will fit it.

You wouldn't believe the criticism I get for the hood.

"Why does it have that hump there"

lol...In the words of Eddie Murphy: "I giggle my motherf**kin' ass off"
