Paseo/Tercel Engine Swap Guide

So we have had threads about engine swaps but in different threads. I wanted to make this in a nut shell for all. Engine swapping is a great way to gain power but to not be taken lightly. Do your homework and should be fine.

First you have to know what engine codes mean so you can understand what you’re putting in your engine bay.

Before the dash:
The number indicates the engine’s generation.
The letters indicate the engine familyFor example in 2JZ-GTE engine is the 2nd model of the family and in the JZ family.

After the dash:

G = twin cam (wide angle, 45 degrees or more between the intake and exhaust valves)

F = "economical" twin cam (narrow angle, around 22 degrees)
T = turbocharged
Z = supercharged

E = fuel injection
i = single point fuel injection
R = air injection
S = swirl intake ports (only a few made in mid '80s)
S = direct injection & swirl pot pistons (starting from '97/98)

U = emission package (Japan)

C = emission package (California)
LPG = LPG fuel

Then once you know that you can explore what options you have. I made a list of engines that I have found that have been done.

Swap List Include:
4E-FE
4E-FTE (Turbo)
4E-FTE/5E-FHE (Hybrid)
5E-FHE (Japan Version)
4A-GE
4A-GZE (Supercharged)
4A-GE/7A-FE (Hybrid)
3S-GE
3S-GTE (Turbo)

4E-FE & 4E-FTE

Easiest, cheapest and most common swap because it's direct bolt-on. The toughest thing on this is the wiring

Engine Cam Valve Displacement HP Torque Compression Model(s)
4E-FE DOHC 4 1331 99@6600 86@5200 9.6:1 EL41 EL51 EP82 EP91

4E-FTE DOHC 4 1331 135@6400 116@4800 8.2:1 EP82 EP91

EP82 EP91
4E-FTE:

4E-FTE/5E-FHE Hybrid

The hybrid uses the 5E-FHE crank block, head, rods, timing belt, belt gears, intake manifold, seals, bearings, flywheel and clutch with 4E-FTE pistons, oil sump, and oil pan.

Although both engines being almost the same there are some differences. All in all, you are taking the best from both engines and making a new one. Never has been dyno tested but I assume it’s a hefty motor.

5E-FHE

The 5E-FHE is a 5E-FE just the Japanese version. The internals are better and it has higher compression. Direct bolt-on

Engine Cam Valve Displacement HP Torque Compression Model(s)
5E-FHE DOHC 4 1496 110@6400 98@5200 9.8:1 EL43 EL44B
5E-FHE DOHC 4 1496 110@6400 100@4000 9.8:1 EL44C EL54(C) EXY10

EL43 EL44B EL44C EL54(C) EXY10
5E-FHE:

4A-GE & 4A-GZE

These engines come out of Celicas, MR2s, and Corollas. They don’t directly bolt-on so custom mounts have to be made.

Engine Cam Valve Displacement HP Torque Compression Model(s)
4A-GE DOHC 4 1587 120@6800 105@6000 9.4:1 AW11 AE92
4A-GE DOHC 4 1587 140@7200 100@7200 10.3:1 AE92 "Redtop"
4A-GE DOHC 4 1587 160@7400 120@7400 10.5:1 AE101 VVT "Silvertop"
4A-GE DOHC 4 1587 165@7800 123@7800 11:1 AE111 VVT "Blacktop"
4A-GZE DOHC 4 1587 145@6400 137@4400 8.0:1 AW11 AE92
4A-GZE DOHC 4 1587 165@6400 152@4400 8.9:1 AE92
4A-GZE DOHC 4 1587 170@6400 152@4400 8.9:1 AE101

AW11 AE92
4A-GE (16 Valve):

AE101
4A-GE (20 Valve):

AE111
4A-GE (20 Valve):

AW11 AE92 AE101
4A-GZE:

4A-GE/7A-FE Hybrid

This hybrid uses the 4A-GE top with the 7A-FE bottom. It increases the displacement to 1.8. More displacement more power. I don't know much about this swap but more details are coming soon.

3S-GE & 3S-GTE

The best horsepower engines swaps for Paseos also is the hardest and heaviest to install (wiring, fabricating engine mounts, notching the frame and space) Lots of time and money will be involved.

Engine Cam Valve Displacement HP Torque Compression Model(s)

3S-GE DOHC 4 1998 150@6000 132@4800 9.2:1 ST162

3S-GE DOHC 4 1998 158@6600 137@4800 9.2:1 ST182 ST183 SW20
3S-GE DOHC 4 1998 200@7000 152@6000 11.5:1 ST200 SW21 (VVT-i)
3S-GTE DOHC 4 1998 182@6000 184@3200 8.5:1 ST165
3S-GTE DOHC 4 1998 200@6000 200@3200 8.1:1 ST185 SW20
3S-GTE DOHC 4 1998 225@6000 225@3200 8.5:1 ST205 SW20

ST162
3S-GE (1st Gen):

SW20 ST182 ST183
3S-GE (2nd Gen):

SW21 ST200
3S-GE (3rd Gen):

SW20 ST165 SW185 SW205
3S-GTE:

As long as I am talking about engine’s I will briefly talk about turboing them. Best way to go about turboing is use an engine that was made to have forced induction; 4E-FTE, 4A-GZE, 3S-GTE. The 5E-FHE has pretty tough internals and maybe good to turbo but like I said you have to do your homework.

I have been doing tons of research on many sites and forums. I have asked Toyota mechanics their opinion's and got thier know how. Enjoy. :)

ok stripes.... first you need to make an introduction thread so we all know who you are and a little about you.. then we can all steer you away from the 4agze engine and into something doable and practical

Ok, well here goes the deal.
Unless you are good with a welder and cutting torch or cutting metal in general I would not suggest this type of mod.

Your engine you have now is more than capable of pulling 200hp with the right turbo setup.

lol, your new to the whole forum thing, its cool, i did the same thing.
http://www.tunemytoyota.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=61that is the intro section, click the new thread button and make a nice formal intro.

and the 4age, 4agze, 3sgte, 3sge, and anything that is NOT a 5efe, 5efhe, or 4efte will require cutting and welding or a decent proportion.
The easiest thing for you to do would be swap in a 4efte engine.

Yeah what tercel5efe93 said. You can make a power house out of that . It has a good low to mid range power band so boosting it would be a good idea unless your a person who buys his side things pears LOL but check out the Puerto eican tercel on YouTube its a red 97 model. And there's another el31 that's kicking a$$.

Whats difficult about the wiring on the 4efte?
Haven't been on here in a while, but here is the update. IF everything goes to plan, I'll be getting a 4efte in about a month.
